We are looking at some scriptures that state God Is…
So far, we have seen that God Is Holy and God Is Light. In this article we will consider that God Is A Consuming Fire. This aspect of God deals with His judgment. We don’t like to think about this too much, but it is an important aspect of who God is.
Hebrews 12:29 tells us, “For our God is a consuming fire”.
Verse 26 of this passage leads into this description of God as one who will “shake earth and heaven” – by His Voice. Now that’s power! This is the power of God in action. He is coming back to take over!
The Lord demonstrates his fierce power and rains devouring consuming fire down upon His enemies when He returns to take over and become the King of heaven and earth.
Fire comes from God… His Voice!
Isaiah 30:30 “And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones”.
“The breath of the Lord” is like fire and brimstone. (vs. 33) “the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it”.
The stream of God’s breath flows down into a lake of fire. By the blast of God sinners perish and are consumed. Job 4:8-9 “Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. 9 By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed”.
The lake of fire for the devil and his angels as well as sinful humanity is never quenched. The fire of God continually feeds it forever. Mark 9:47-48 “…to be cast into hell fire: 48 Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched”.
We have seen that Fire from the Lord is associated with judgment. The originator of fire is God. Fire comes from Him.
Psalm 18:13-15 “The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire. 14 Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them. 15 Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils”.
We know about the fire breathing dragon in mythical stories, but we never consider that we have a fire-breathing God.
Revelation 1:14-15 “… and his eyes were as a flame of fire; 15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace…”.
In this passage, fire is associated with Jesus’ judgment as He prepares the earth for His return. He will cleanse the wickedness of the earth with fire prior to the 1000-year reign of the Kingdom of God. We also see this with the passing of the first heaven and earth with Fire that brings in a New Heaven and New Earth (Revelation 21:1; 2 Peter 3:12-13).
Revelation 4: 5 “And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God”.
Many people say that they would like to go to heaven and to the Throne of God. I would too. Who wouldn’t! But be careful! If you were to somehow go there with your present human body, you would disintegrate immediately! Think about what Revelation 4:5 is saying. We would be frightened beyond belief!
Lightenings… Thunderings… Voices… coming out of the Throne of God.
Seven Lamps of Fire burning before the Throne.
What a scene!
The message in this article is simply that we cannot even approach God in our humanity. He is too powerful and overwhelming. It would be like trending into a nuclear reactor with no protection. Your life would be obliterated before you could even get close.
Our God is a consuming fire.
In our next post, we will see that God Is Love.
Until then may the Grace and Peace of God be with you all!
Amen
