The Promise

Lucifer has rebelled.

God’s creation has been tragically judged and destroyed.

Adam and Eve have been deceived into disobeying God and now find themselves dead in sin.

The relationship between the couple and God have been cut off.

They are banished from paradise and the tree of life by a flaming Cherubims sword.

God takes immediate action. He gives a promise to the couple in Genesis 3:15

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

This is the seed of the promise of all promises. Satan’s doom is going to come from the woman’s seed. First, the seed of the serpent will bruise the heel of the seed of the woman. On the cross Satan bruised the heel of Christ, causing His death. Bruising suggests something that was not ultimate or final. Christ died on our behalf being made sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21). He bore our judgment upon Calvary’s cross and, in doing so, bruised His heel. Though wounded, the damage done to Jesus was not final, for He came back from the dead three days later.

Then the seed of the woman will bruise (crush) the serpent’s head; a death blow that will eradicate him and his work for all eternity. This occurred at the cross and will be ultimately fulfilled when the Lord destroys Satan at the last day. He will be cast into the bottomless pit (Revelation 20).

This speaks prophetically of Israel (her seed) and the gentile nations (thy seed). The Lord Jesus Christ came to the nation of Israel as her Messiah under the law to fulfill it (Galatians 4:4). His seed and heritage are well established in the first chapter of Matthew and Luke respectively. Jesus was a Jew coming to his own people (John 1:11). This will reconcile the earth through that nation.

God’s original calling to man will be realized to subdue the earth and have dominion over it as described in Genesis 1:26-31. Paradise lost will become paradise restored. The Lord told Abraham “…I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 22:17-18a). The seed promise includes the sand on the seashore, and the stars in the heavens. Both heaven and earth will be reconciled back to God where He through Christ Jesus will be “all in all” (1 Corinthians 15:28, Colossians 1:20).

Thus, we have the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ and the heavenly ministry of Christ Jesus, the fulfillment of the promise.

Grace and peace unto you from our Lord Jesus Christ.
